Cutting edge research and innovation in a real-world setting at Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (GRID)
Building new industries for a better Glasgow at GRID.
An inspiring environment research, development, and innovation
Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (GRID) is one of the UK’s most concentrated environments for health innovation and life sciences, bringing together academia, industry, and the NHS to accelerate the translation of research into measurable impact. The 700-acre innovation district links the University of Glasgow with the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Within that, the Clinical Innovation Zone is an established healthcare innovation cluster based around the hospital campus.
Supporting innovation across health and life sciences
Research and innovation across GRID spans precision medicine and diagnostics, therapeutics and biotechnology, digital health and data, and medical technology.
The district has particular strengths in cancer research and precision medicine, alongside a much broader health innovation community working across diagnostics, drug development, digital health, imaging and medical devices.
Fostering connections in Glasgow's Clinical Innovation Zone
GRID puts companies right next to the University of Glasgow, giving life sciences, health, defence, creative and maritime businesses a shared base to exchange ideas, retain talent and move faster.
For life sciences and health, much of that connection happens through the Clinical Innovation Zone, where companies work side by side with researchers and clinicians, sharing space, expertise and early access to new thinking. Spin-out Causeway Therapeutics is one result of that closeness, growing directly out of the Zone’s day-to-day collaboration.
Living Laboratory project
In 2020, the Living Laboratory for Precision Medicine received £38 million from UK Research and Innovation to build infrastructure that fosters collaboration in precision medicine. Integrated within Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, it connects research, healthcare, and industry, turning research into practical, real-world applications through expert co-development.
The Living Laboratory now includes the Health Innovation Hub, a purpose-built facility offering CL2 wet labs and offices developed alongside the University of Glasgow’s precision medicine programme.
Our specialised assets at Glasgow Riverside Innovation District
The Health Innovation Hub is built around the way health innovators actually work, spanning precision medicine, diagnostics, therapeutics, digital health and medical technology. It’s just a mile from Glasgow city centre and a short walk from Govan Subway, putting specialist facilities within easy reach for the wider GRID community.
Health Innovation Hub
The Health Innovation Hub (HiH) is a purpose-built home for life sciences and health innovators within GRID, located beside Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in the Clinical Innovation Zone.
Developed in collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Living Laboratory for Precision Medicine, HiH brings specialist laboratories, offices, shared equipment, and on-site support together in one building, helping businesses develop, test, and commercialise new approaches to healthcare, bringing them closer to clinicians, researchers, and industry partners.
