Meet the team building the world’s first solar-powered ambulance

What happens when you give ambitious engineering talent the space to build? At Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Solar Team Eindhoven has spent well over a decade answering that question through solar-powered mobility projects designed for real-world applications.
Stella Juva
Founded in 2012, the team first gained attention with Stella, a solar-powered family car. Stella was created at a time when electric mobility was still questioned by many. While other solar teams focused on racing vehicles, Solar Team Eindhoven chose a different direction: practical transport technology that could serve everyday needs.
Today, the team is working on their most ambitious project yet: Stella Juva. The world’s first solar-powered ambulance.
Innovation for a better tomorrow
Developed from the Disruptor building on the TU/e campus, Stella Juva is designed for regions where access to emergency care is limited by poor infrastructure, unreliable electricity, or fuel shortages. The vehicle is intended to operate in remote environments such as sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond. All while using solar energy to function. The timing of this vehicle too, could not be more pointed. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted global energy and fuel markets, bringing the question of energy security and access to emergency medical care back to the top of the international agenda.
Talent and collaboration
The project began, as every Solar Team Eindhoven project does, with a new group of students and a blank piece of paper. There was no fixed brief, no predefined outcome, and no professor deciding what the team should build. Instead, the group spent their first weeks discussing values, impact, and purpose before arriving at the idea of a solar-powered ambulance.
From there, the project quickly expanded beyond engineering alone. The team had to work with NGOs and humanitarian organisations to better understand how emergency care functions in remote areas, and what an ambulance operating in those environments actually requires.
Location
Location plays an important role in the innovation process. For the first time, Solar Team Eindhoven’s full production process takes place entirely on the TU/e campus. Here, designers, engineers, and production teams work within walking distance of each other inside a wider ecosystem of start-ups, researchers, knowledge institutions, and technology companies.
